Navajo Ranger Set, by Calvin Begay, Fluted Silver

$450.00

Navajo, New Mexico

1990s

Sterling silver, leather

Buckle 1 1/2 inches by 1 3/4 inches (3.8 by 4.4 cm)

Belt length 40 inches (101.6 cm)

Provenance: Private collection, El Paso, Texas

The buckle, keeper, and tip are each worked in heavy sterling with deep parallel fluting that radiates outward from a plain raised center band, the ridges cut sharply enough to catch light along their full length. The buckle frame is squared, with the fluted decoration flaring to a scalloped edge on either side of the tongue, and the keepers repeat the pattern at reduced scale. The set is mounted on a dark brown leather belt with black edge stitching, unworn.

Calvin Begay is a Navajo silversmith working out of the Gallup and Shiprock area of New Mexico. He is best known for lapidary inlay work in turquoise, coral, opal, and shell, and his pieces are widely distributed through Southwestern trade.
