Navajo
American Southwest
1920s
Sterling silver
Height 4 inches, width 4 1/8 inches, 147.23 grams
Provenance: Private collection, Las Cruces, New Mexico
This large square buckle is worked in sterling silver with deep repoussé and stamp work across a functional center bar and tongue. Four raised feather forms fill the corners, each carrying rows of fine engraved lines that fan across the silver, while columns of raised conical elements run down both sides of the central opening. A scalloped border frames the face, stamped along its edge with a repeating band of small marks. The silver has darkened to a deep patina that settles into the recesses and throws the raised work into relief. The reverse shows the pushed out repoussé from behind and retains its original center bar and tongue for a belt.
