Navajo Sand Cast Buckle with Beaded Turquoise Bezel

$500.00

Navajo, Arizona or New Mexico

1960s

Sterling silver, natural turquoise, leather

Buckle 2 1/2 inches by 2 1/4 inches (6.4 by 5.7 cm)

Belt length 48 inches, adjustable (121.9 cm)

Provenance: Private collection, Los Alamos, New Mexico

The buckle is sand cast as an open floral form, the silver flowing into curled scrolled arms and pointed petals with wide openings left between them, so the leather shows through the body of the buckle. At the center sits a single oval turquoise in a bright blue with brown matrix, held in a twisted rope bezel and ringed by a border of applied silver drops. The cast surface retains the grain and slight unevenness of the mold, and the piece is mounted on a black leather belt with silver studs.
