Navajo, Southwest
1960s
Sterling silver
2 1/2 inches by 3 3/4 inches (6.4 by 9.5 cm)
85.02 grams
Provenance: Private collection, Deming, New Mexico
The buckle is sand cast in an openwork design with no set stone, built from paired scrolls that curl inward toward the center and mirror one another across both axes of the face. Crescent and horn shaped forms rise between the scrolls and meet at the middle, and the voids left between the cast elements carry as much of the design as the silver itself. At 85 grams the silver is thick and heavy, holding the rounded molten contours characteristic of casting, with a dark patina settled into the hollows.
