Navajo, Southwest
Circa 1940s to early 1950s
Sterling silver, leather
Nine conchos, each 2 1/2 inches by 1 3/4 inches (6.4 by 4.4 cm)
Belt length 38 3/4 inches (98.4 cm)
Provenance: Private collection, Albuquerque, New Mexico
The belt carries nine sand cast conchos and a matching buckle on a black leather strap, each plaque worked as an openwork frame of curling scrolls and pointed lobes surrounding a plain raised cross at the center. The cast silver holds the soft rounded contours left by the sand mold, with chiseled line accents cut into the terminals and a dark patina settled in the recesses. The leather is worn dark and shows the marks of long use, and the openwork allows the strap to show through each concho.
