Navajo
Southwest
1920s
Sterling silver and turquoise
Total circumference 7 1/2 in (19.1 cm), gap 1 1/8 in (2.9 cm), width 1 1/2 in (3.8 cm); 59.16 grams
Provenance: Santa Barbara trade
This early Navajo cuff is built on a sand cast silver frame, poured into a carved tufa mold to produce the open looped form on each side of the center. A single oval turquoise stone, blue with dark matrix, sits in a plain bezel at the middle, framed by twisted rope edges that follow the cast openings. The heavy, slightly porous surface is characteristic of tufa cast work from the 1920s.
The casting gives the cuff a sculptural weight and depth that stamped sheet silver cannot match, with the open loops lightening an otherwise massive frame. The shanks are stamped with fan and arrow motifs where the cast form narrows toward the terminals. At close to 60 grams across a 1 1/2 inch width, the cuff is a substantial early piece that adjusts through its open back.
