Navajo Nation, Southwest
New Mexico
Circa 1940
35¼" × 50" × 2½"
Provenance: Found hanging on a wall in Lamy, NM
A vintage truck door in green painted steel, carrying a circular painted logo at center that reads "NAVAJO SERVICE" around the perimeter with a figure rendered in the middle. The original chrome door handle remains in place on the left side, and the empty window frame opens at the top, its rubber gasket still partially intact. The green paint has aged to a deep patina, with rust working through at the edges, along the window channel, and across a large area behind the logo.
The door retains its original hinge hardware on the right side and latch mechanism at the left edge, giving it full structural integrity as a wall-mounted object. Lamy, New Mexico sits at the edge of the Navajo Nation trade corridor, and commercial signage of this type from mid-century Southwestern service businesses is increasingly scarce. The combination of painted commercial lettering, original hardware, and surface wear accumulated over decades makes this a singular piece of Southwestern material culture.
