Navajo
Southwest
1970s
Sterling silver and turquoise
2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches (6.4 x 8.9 cm)
166.39 grams
Provenance: Private collection, Prescott, Arizona
The slide is built as a shield shaped plate of heavy silver, chased at the edges with feather forms that radiate outward, and carrying at its centre a buffalo head raised in high relief with the coat worked in dense stippled punchwork and the horns curving forward clear of the surface. Above the plate sits a large oval turquoise, blue green and crossed by a webbed golden brown matrix that runs edge to edge, set in a plain bezel and mounted so it reads as sky above the animal. The whole is carried on a braided black leather cord, and at 166 grams the slide has the substance of a piece made to be seen at a distance.
