A butterfly form hair pin with wide openwork wings, each edged in hand stamped scalloped and line borders and pierced with a long oval cutout. The silver body is stamped to suggest the head and thorax, set with a single oval turquoise cabochon in a plain bezel, and finished with twisted wire antennae ending in silver balls. A separate silver pin stick passes through the wings to secure the piece in the hair, and the silver carries a darkened patina consistent with age.
Larry Frank was a Taos collector and scholar, co-author of Indian Silver Jewelry of the Southwest 1868 to 1930 and New Kingdom of the Saints.
