Navajo, Southwest
1980s
Sterling silver, leather
Ten conchos, each 2 inches by 2 1/2 inches (5.1 by 6.4 cm)
Buckle 2 inches by 3 1/4 inches (5.1 by 8.3 cm)
Belt length 35 inches (88.9 cm)
305.77 grams
Signed R. Peter
Provenance: Private collection, Taos, New Mexico
The belt carries ten scalloped conchos and a rectangular buckle on a black leather strap, each plaque worked with radiating petal forms fanning outward from a stamped diamond at the center and framed by dense fields of fine chisel stamping. The stippled grounds between the petals are struck closely enough to read as texture rather than as individual marks, and rows of punched dots follow the scalloped borders. At just over 300 grams the belt is substantially made, and copper loops on the reverse carry the leather beneath the plaques.
The set is signed R. Peter, and the consistency of the stamping across eleven plaques is the measure of the work, since each petal, dot, and border mark is struck by hand and any variation in depth or spacing shows immediately when the conchos are seen in a row.
