Navajo
Southwest
1930s
Sterling silver and turquoise
Total circumference 9 1/2 in (24.1 cm), gap 1 1/4 in (3.2 cm), width 1 1/2 in (3.8 cm); 92.4 grams
Provenance: Larry Frank, Taos, NM
This Navajo cuff sets three large turquoise nuggets across the front, natural irregular stones in blue with brown and tan matrix and the largest raised at the center. Each stone is held in a plain serrated bezel that follows its uneven shape, keeping the natural form of the turquoise rather than cutting it to a regular oval. The three stones vary in size and outline, giving the front an organic, unmatched character.
The stones are mounted on a heavy split band that separates into three shanks running the length of the cuff. At just over 92 grams the piece is exceptionally heavy, with the weight carried in both the thick silver band and the large stones. The 9 1/2 inch circumference with a 1 1/4 inch gap suits a large wrist and adjusts through the open back.
Larry Frank was a Taos collector and scholar, co-author of Indian Silver Jewelry of the Southwest 1868 to 1930 and New Kingdom of the Saints.
