Navajo
Southwest
1930
Sterling silver and turquoise
Total circumference 8 1/2 in (21.6 cm), gap 1 1/2 in (3.8 cm), width 1 in (2.5 cm); 65.46 grams
Provenance: Larry Frank, Taos, NM
This Navajo cuff sets three blue turquoise stones across the front, a large rectangular stone at the center between two ovals. The center stone sits in a scalloped, stamped bezel, while round silver drop beads are set through the open framework around all three settings. The turquoise is a clear blue with light matrix, well matched across the stones.
The band is built as three split shanks that separate below the stones and carry the beadwork between them, an openwork construction that lightens a wide cuff. At just over 65 grams across a 1 inch width, the piece has good weight while keeping an airy profile. The 8 1/2 inch circumference with a 1 1/2 inch gap suits a larger wrist and adjusts through the open back.
Larry Frank was a Taos collector and scholar, co-author of Indian Silver Jewelry of the Southwest 1868 to 1930 and New Kingdom of the Saints.
