Southwest
Sterling silver and natural turquoise
Total circumference 9 in (22.9 cm), gap 1 1/4 in (3.2 cm), width 1 in (2.5 cm); 42.36 grams
Provenance: Larry Frank, Taos, NM
This Navajo cuff sets three square turquoise stones in plain bezels across an openwork silver band. The central motif is a whirling log, a traditional Southwest symbol of wellbeing used on Navajo silver before 1940, here worked in openwork and surrounded by stamped fan and sunburst accents. The turquoise is a natural blue green, matched across the three square stones, set against the darkened recesses of the stamp work.
Larry Frank was a Taos collector and scholar, co-author of Indian Silver Jewelry of the Southwest 1868 to 1930 and New Kingdom of the Saints.
