Navajo
Southwest
1930
Sterling silver and turquoise
Total circumference 8 in (20.3 cm), gap 1 3/8 in (3.5 cm), width 1 in (2.5 cm)
Provenance: Private collection, Santa Barbara, CA
This early Navajo cuff sets a row of oval turquoise stones across the front, graduated toward a larger center stone, each in a plain bezel. Stamped silver buttons sit between the stones, and stamped half moon and beadwork borders run along both edges of the heavy silver band. The turquoise is blue with brown matrix, closely matched across the row.
The stamped borders and buttons frame the stones and fill the band, giving the front a fuller look than the bezels alone. The silver is heavy and solid, tapering to plain shanks at the back. The setting and stamp work are characteristic of early Navajo silverwork around 1930.
