Navajo Squash Blossom Necklace and Earrings

$2,650.00

Navajo

American Southwest

1950s

Sterling silver and natural turquoise

Length 20 in / 51 cm
Naja 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 in / 6.4 x 6.4 cm
159.7 grams

Provenance: Larry Frank, Taos, New Mexico

This Navajo set pairs a squash blossom necklace with matching earrings, all worked in sterling silver with turquoise reserved for the naja and the earring tops. The necklace strand is built from round silver beads that graduate toward the front, with silver squash blossom drops running along the lower half. A twisted wire crescent naja hangs at the center front, framing a single natural turquoise.

The earrings echo the necklace, each with a natural turquoise set above a silver blossom drop and finished with a screw back fitting. The naja descends from Moorish metalwork and entered Navajo silver as both ornament and protective motif, while the squash blossom bead traces to Spanish pomegranate ornament. At 20 inches and just under 160 grams, the necklace is a wearable length, and the matched earrings make it a complete set.

From the collection of Larry Frank, a Taos collector and scholar, co-author of Indian Silver Jewelry of the Southwest 1868 to 1930 and New Kingdom of the Saints.
