Navajo, Southwest  Circa 1930

Sterling silver, natural turquoise

Provenance: Collection of Larry Frank, Taos.

Navajo silversmithing of the 1930s represents a mature phase of a tradition that developed rapidly from the mid-nineteenth century, blending indigenous design sensibility with techniques acquired through contact with Mexican and Anglo craftsmen. Cuff bracelets set with natural turquoise were among the most prevalent forms, worn by Navajo men and women and increasingly collected by non-Native buyers during this period. Larry Frank of Taos was one of the most respected collectors and scholars of Southwestern jewelry and Native American art, and his provenance is considered significant in the field.

The bracelet features a central large oval turquoise cabochon flanked by smaller stones in teardrop and round cuts, set in silver with applied ropetwist and bead surrounds. The natural turquoise displays characteristic matrix and color variation consistent with Southwest sources. An old repair is present on the reverse, consistent with age and use.
