Navajo ring-making in silver and turquoise developed alongside the broader silversmithing tradition that flourished from the late nineteenth century, with ring forms becoming increasingly common through the 1920s and 1930s. Natural turquoise of this period was sourced from mines across the Southwest, and stones with strong color and matrix were favored by both Navajo smiths and their buyers. Rings of this type were worn daily and also circulated through trading posts and private collectors throughout the twentieth century.
This ring features a cushion-shaped natural turquoise cabochon with characteristic brown matrix, bezel-set in a darkened sterling silver mount with applied ball details at the shoulders and an open split-band shank. The stone displays strong color consistent with Southwest sources. The silver shows age-appropriate patina throughout.
