This necklace by Alex Sanchez centers on a heavy gauge sterling silver pendant covered in appliqué petroglyph symbols, among them spirals, a hand, crosses, and figural forms. A katsina sun face with a radiating feather headdress sits at the top of the panel, and a single coral cabochon is set among the symbols below. The pendant hangs from a triangular bail on a strand of tapered silver barrel beads spaced with fluted bead clusters.
The applied symbols draw on ancient petroglyph and rock art imagery, raised against a darkened silver ground in the style Sanchez is known for. The heavy gauge silver gives the pendant weight and depth, each symbol individually formed and applied rather than stamped flat. At 20 inches with a 5 1/2 inch pendant, it wears as a bold contemporary piece built around the silverwork.
Made by Alex Sanchez, born 1969 in Mexican Springs, New Mexico, a silversmith of Navajo (Water Edge Clan) and Zuni heritage. He learned silversmithing from his older brother Myron Panteah and has exhibited and sold his work since 2001, known for petroglyph symbols appliquéd onto heavy gauge sterling. His work has been shown at the Santa Fe Indian Market and the Heard Museum, with awards from the Red Earth Show, the Gallup Ceremonial, and the Navajo Nation Fair.
