West Mexico
100 BC to 200 AD
Ceramic
Height 9 inches, Width 6.5 inches, Depth 5 inches
Provenance: Howard Rose Gallery, New York; Private Southern California Collection
The pair consists of two seated figures wearing matching caps with alternating red and cream stripes, set above faces with large almond shaped eyes rendered in white and black pigment. Each figure has a prominent projecting nose, a dotted necklace pattern in white pigment around the neck, and one arm raised while the other rests near the lap. The ears differ between the two figures, with one wearing plain rounded ear ornaments and the other wearing a cluster of small floral shaped ornaments.
One figure holds a round object in a raised, clenched hand near the shoulder, while the other holds a coiled, spiral shaped object near the side of the head. The lower body of one figure is covered by a skirt painted with vertical red and cream stripes, while the other displays a pattern of painted white lines across the legs. Both figures are rendered in red slip with painted decoration in white, ochre, and black, and both remain seated with their legs positioned in front of the body.
