Nayarit
West Mexico
100 BC to 250 AD
Ceramic with painted decoration
Height 8 inches, Width 5 1/2 inches, Depth 3 inches
Provenance: Scott and Stuart Gentling, Dallas, Texas
The pair consists of two figures with raised, swept back hairstyles and rounded ear ornaments set against a red slip ground. Each figure has an open mouth with a rounded aperture, and one figure displays a small ring ornament through the septum of the nose. A dense pattern of white painted dots descends from the neck in a triangular field across the chest of each figure.
A horizontal white band encircles the waist of each figure, with additional white striping visible on the lower legs. One figure stands with an arm bent and the hand resting on the hip. Both figures share the same scale, painted dot decoration, and red slip surface, and retain their original painted surfaces without evidence of restoration.
