Niue Island Kotoua Club, Wood

$8,800.00

Niue Island, Polynesia

19th century

Wood

Height: 70 in. (177.8 cm)

Provenance: Private New Zealand collection

The kotoua is a club form specific to Niue Island, distinguished by its long tapering blade that terminates in a sharp point at both ends, with a narrow grip section marked by incised banding. Niue, an isolated raised coral island in central Polynesia, produced a small but distinct corpus of wooden weapons, and the kotoua is among the most architecturally resolved of Polynesian club forms. This example dates to the 19th century and retains an even dark patina consistent with age and handling.

The carving is executed with precision along the full length of the blade, maintaining a consistent taper from the widest point down to both terminals. Incised ring decoration at the grip and shoulder zones provides the only surface articulation, keeping the overall design visually spare. The piece comes from a private New Zealand collection, a plausible provenance for 19th-century Niuean material given historical trade and colonial connections between the two islands.
