Nuu-chah-nulth Model Hunting Canoe, British Columbia 1880

$3,500.00

Wood with pigment

Length 20 3/4 in / 52.7 cm

Provenance: Bill Henderson, Olympia, Washington

This model hunting canoe comes from the Nuu-chah-nulth region of the west coast of Vancouver Island, historically referred to in older collecting records as Nootka. Canoes were central to Northwest Coast life, supporting travel, fishing, sea-mammal hunting, trade, and ceremonial movement. The inclusion of figures, paddles, and a whale connects the model to maritime hunting traditions.

The canoe is carved in wood with dark exterior pigment and a shaped high prow and stern. The seated figures, loose paddles, and whale element create a complete narrative presentation rather than a plain model form. Its 1880 date and Bill Henderson provenance give the piece a clear late 19th-century collecting context.
