Northern Europe
2 x 2 1/4 inches (5.1 x 5.7 cm)
Provenance: André Fourquet, Paris
A shallow rectangular panel worked in relief, with four standing figures set beneath an arcade of cusped ogee arches. The arcade, the columnar dividers, and the heavy vertical fall of the drapery follow northern European Gothic convention for small devotional imagery. A hole drilled through the arcade at the upper edge indicates the panel was made to be fixed or suspended.
The figures are modelled in high relief against a plain recessed ground, three of them bearded and hooded, one veiled at the left, with a smaller kneeling figure at the center. Detail survives in the faces, the hands, and the fall of the robes. The ground behind the figures is left plain and recessed, throwing the modelling of the group forward.
