This Northern French carved wood crucifix presents Christ in the frontal, hieratic manner that derives from the Romanesque tradition of French religious carving, with a flat schematic body, stylized facial features, and arms extended horizontally along the cross arms in the early medieval convention. The deeply carved surface and the rich brown patination of the wood give the piece a presence that belies its relatively modest scale.
