Northern Plains Beaded Knife Sheath, Tin Tinklers

$4,500.00

Northern Plains

Fort Peck, Montana

Collected 1883

Buffalo hide, sinew, glass beads, tin tinklers

Length 10 5/8"

Provenance: Private East Coast collection

The front face of this buffalo hide knife sheath is fully beaded in a light blue ground with a bold geometric design of interlocking stepped figures in dark blue, yellow, green, and red, radiating from a central axis along the length of the sheath. A separately beaded tab at the top carries a row of stepped mountain forms in yellow and blue against a darker blue ground, and a fringe of tin tinkler cones hangs from the top edge and along both sides of the sheath. The reverse is unbeaded buffalo hide, sewn along the center seam with sinew, with a rawhide tie at the top and additional tin tinklers at the sides, showing the deep patina and wear consistent with field collection in 1883.
