Terence Barrow, artist
Nukuoro, Caroline Islands; subject Micronesia
20th century
Graphite on paper
12 x 17.5 in matted
This is a graphite study by the Pacific art scholar Terence Barrow showing a single Nukuoro standing figure from three sides, front, profile, and back. The figure has the rounded featureless head, sloping shoulders, and smooth tapering body of the Nukuoro carved figures known as tino aitu, each view set on a small round base. Barrow has inscribed the sheet at the top, tino aitu Nukuoro, and noted the height at the upper left and along the lower edge as fourteen to sixteen inches. The drawing is in pencil on paper with light folds and is matted.
Terence Barrow (1923 to 2001) was a New Zealand born scholar of Pacific and Polynesian art who wrote widely on Maori and Oceanic carving. He studied and catalogued Pacific material culture across a long career, and this working study reflects his close attention to the form of the Nukuoro figures. It was obtained directly from Dr. Barrow in 1992.
