This photogravure by Edward S. Curtis, titled Haiyahl, depicts a named Nuu-chah-nulth subject and was printed in 1915 on Dutch Van Gelder paper from his documentation of the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast in The North American Indian. The Nootka, known today as the Nuu-chah-nulth, are a maritime people of the west coast of Vancouver Island celebrated for their mastery of open ocean whale hunting, elaborate ceremonial traditions, and sophisticated artistic culture.
