This first edition of Old China Town is bound in its original black cloth stamped in gilt and fitted into a stunning handmade outer cover of full brocade cloth, trimmed in chintz and with a gilt cloth applique with beads and Chinese amulets, inscribed "To my Comrade of the stirring life we now live in new Chinatown from one who lived loved and wrought lang syne in Old Chinatown. Faithfully ever, Donaldina Cameron, San Francisco, May Second 1917." Donaldina Cameron (1869 to 1968) was a New Zealand-born American Presbyterian missionary who was a pioneer in the fight against slavery in San Francisco's Chinatown, helping more than 2,000 Chinese immigrant girls and women escape from forced prostitution or indentured servitude, becoming known as Fahn Quai, the White Devil of Chinatown, as well as the Angry Angel and Lo Mo of Chinatown.
The photographs by Arnold Genthe, one of the foremost photographers of his era, document San Francisco's Chinatown before its destruction in the 1906 earthquake and fire, creating a visual record of a world that no longer existed by the time this book was published. The association copy inscription from Cameron herself, connecting this volume directly to one of the most remarkable humanitarian figures in San Francisco history, makes this an object of exceptional provenance and historical significance.
