Circa 1910
Silver print
15 1/2 × 22" (39.37 × 55.88 cm) in original frame
Provenance: Private collection, Flagstaff, Arizona. Photographer's label on reverse.
This silver print by J.R. Willis shows Old Walpi, the historic Hopi village set along the edge of First Mesa in Arizona. The image looks across the mesa top toward the adobe and stone architecture, with ladders, terraces, and the cliff edge clearly visible. The original frame and photographer's label on reverse give the work a preserved period presentation.
Willis was active as a painter and photographer of Southwestern landscapes and Native American subjects, working in Gallup, New Mexico, and later Albuquerque. This view emphasizes the relationship between architecture and landscape, with the village built directly into the mesa setting. The work records one of the most visually recognized Pueblo villages of the Southwest.
