Olmec Incised Vessel with Avian Motif Design

$3,850.00

Olmec

Mexico

9th to 6th century BC

Ceramic

Height 9 1/2 inches, Diameter 6 1/4 inches

Provenance: Mike Teager, Bartow, Florida; Gayfryd Steinberg, New York socialite

The vessel is cylindrical with a gently flared rim and a slight tapering waist toward the base. A band of incised rectangular panels encircles the neck just below the rim, each containing carved linear and geometric motifs. A horizontal incised line separates this upper band from the wider body of the vessel.

The lower body is decorated with incised avian imagery, including a curling bird head with feather like lines on one side and a fanned, feather patterned design suggesting a wing on the adjacent side. The buff colored surface is scattered with small dark speckles consistent with firing. The vessel is intact, with the incised decoration well preserved across the body.
