Olmec and Tlatilco cultures
Mexico
300 to 200 BC
Ceramic
Range 1 1/4 to 2 1/2 inches
Provenance: Private New England Collection, before 1950
This lot consists of multiple small ceramic heads of varying size, color, and style, arranged to show a range of facial types and hairstyles. Some heads display raised headbands or rows of applied hair, while others show a smoother, more simplified treatment of the face and scalp. The surfaces range from pale buff and cream tones to reddish orange and darker gray fired clay.
One head is mounted upright on a small metal stand, while the remaining examples are unmounted and vary in condition, with some retaining sharper facial detail than others. The group includes examples attributed to both the Olmec and Tlatilco traditions, reflecting differences in modeling and proportion between the two. Several pieces show traces of surface wear and encrustation consistent with long burial.
