One of the defining works of 20th century printmaking, the Vollard Suite comprises 100 etchings produced by Picasso between 1930 and 1937 for the celebrated Parisian dealer Ambroise Vollard. This plate belongs to the Sculptor's Studio sequence, the largest thematic grouping within the suite, in which a bearded classical sculptor contemplates scenes of mythological drama rendered as if in marble relief. Here the reclining sculptor and his female companion gaze upon a bacchanale in which a powerful bull moves through a tangle of figures against a coastal landscape, the whole scene described in Picasso's fluid, unbroken line.
Printed in an edition of 260 on Montval laid paper bearing the Vollard watermark, with full deckled margins, and signed in pencil lower right by Picasso. The provenance connects this impression to Antonio Giulio Bragaglia, the pioneering Futurist photographer and theorist of fotodinamismo, who was a noted collector of modern works on paper in Rome. The Vollard Suite is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the British Museum, London; the National Gallery of Canada; and major institutions worldwide.
The bacchanale with bull is among the most dramatically charged subjects in the Vollard Suite, drawing on classical antiquity and Picasso's personal mythology of the bull as a figure of raw, elemental force. The composition, with its interlocking figures, coastal setting, and the sculptor's detached yet absorbed gaze, brings together the suite's central themes of creation, desire, and the classical world in a single image of considerable complexity. This impression, in strong condition with full deckled margins, represents one of the suite's most ambitious and visually commanding plates.
