Pacific Island Combs with Plaited Fiber Bindings

$350.00

Pacific Islands, 1950s

Wood, plant fiber, cane

Largest height 11 3/4 inches (29.8 cm)

Provenance: Melbourne trade, Australia

Six combs are shown together, each cut with long tines below a bound head, the tines running from fine and closely set to broad and widely spaced across the group. Four are wrapped in plaited fiber worked in two tones so the binding carries a checkered or diamond pattern down its length, one is bound in plain dark cordage over a pale turned shaft, and the last is finished in a dense open lattice weave that widens toward the tines. The tines are dark and glossy on three of the combs and pale honey brown on the others, and the bindings are tight and complete throughout with only minor fraying at the ends.
