Pair of Peruvian Paintings of Manco Cápac and Mama Ocllo, Late 18th or Early 19th Century

$2,800.00

Peruvian

Late 18th or early 19th century

Oil on board

Dimensions including frame: 13 x 16 in (33 x 40.6 cm)

Provenance: Private collection, Santa Barbara, CA

This pair of Peruvian paintings depicts Manco Cápac and Mama Ocllo, the legendary founding figures of Inca origin tradition. Manco Cápac is shown as the first Inca ruler, while Mama Ocllo is represented as his wife and sister, both connected with the establishment of Cuzco and the beginning of Inca dynastic history. Painted in oil on board, the pair presents these ancestral figures in formal dress with strong color and direct frontal composition.

The paintings belong to a late colonial or early republican Peruvian visual tradition in which Inca rulers and founding figures were represented through historical portrait formats. These are not Pre-Columbian objects, but later painted interpretations of Inca dynastic memory and Peruvian identity. Their paired format gives the works greater historical and visual coherence than either figure would have alone.
