Paiute, Great Basin
Circa 1940
Coiled grass with glass bead decoration
Height 2¼ inches (5.7 cm), diameter 5 inches (12.7 cm)
Provenance: Diane Luther, Albuquerque, New Mexico
This low coiled basket is decorated across its surface with finely applied glass beadwork in the Paiute tradition, where beading was integrated into the weaving rather than applied afterward. The diameter of 5 inches and shallow profile are characteristic of the decorative basket forms produced for trade in the mid-twentieth century, and the beadwork is tightly executed. Provenance traces to the Diane Luther collection, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
