Patrick Swazo Hinds (1929–1974), known by his Tesuque name Grey Squirrel, was among the significant Pueblo painters working in the mid-20th century Southwest. Born at Tesuque Pueblo near Santa Fe, he developed a figurative style rooted in the Pueblo easel painting tradition while bringing a directness of observation to his subjects that distinguishes his work within the genre. This painting depicts a Tesuque woman in a vertical format that gives full presence to the figure.
Swazo Hinds exhibited widely during his lifetime and his work is held in institutional and private collections across the Southwest.
