Pearl S. Buck
United States
1972
Typed letter with ink signature on paper
Height 10 inches, width 8 inches
Provenance: Private collection, New Jersey
This typed letter is dated March 23, 1972, addressed to Mr. Kenneth Douglas of New York, and signed in ink by the writer Pearl S. Buck above her typed name. Across three paragraphs the letter gives Buck's view of President Nixon's recent trip to China, opening that people who believe the trip was meaningless except for the pandas are simply ignorant of history, past and present. She goes on to call the visit the beginning of a new era and notes that it had been suggested to two earlier presidents before Nixon acted.
The single sheet is typed on plain paper with a typist's notation at the lower left and shows toning consistent with age. Buck's signature appears in dark ink beneath the closing. The letter is offered as a single signed sheet.
