Sand-core glass
Circa 500 BC
Height 4 1/2"
Provenance: Private collection, New York; New York trade
This Phoenician sand-core glass alabastron is decorated with opaque white threads trailed over a dark ground and dragged upward to form a feathered or festoon pattern across the body, with horizontal banding at the shoulder and base. Two small pinched handles are applied at the shoulder, and the rim is folded outward in the manner typical of Phoenician core-formed vessels of the period. The piece is composed of three joined sections and is presented on a modern acrylic base.
Sand-core or core-formed glass vessels were produced across the eastern Mediterranean from the fifteenth century BC onward, with Phoenician workshops becoming the leading producers of the technique during the first millennium BC. Alabastra of this type were used to hold oils and unguents and were traded widely throughout the ancient Mediterranean world. The feathered white-on-dark decoration visible here is among the most recognized surface treatments associated with Phoenician glasswork of the Archaic period.
