Plains Antique Sinew-Backed Bow and Blood Groove Arrow

$1,800.00

Plains, North America

1850s

Wood, sinew, turkey vulture feathers

Bow length 45" (114.3 cm); arrow length 26 1/2" (67.3 cm)

Provenance: Dave Hrachovy, Lake Arrowhead, CA

Bows and arrows were the primary hunting and warfare implements of Plains peoples through the mid-19th century, produced with materials and techniques refined over generations to maximize accuracy, range, and penetration in the specific conditions of Plains hunting and combat. The blood groove carved into this arrow shaft, a shallow channel running from the arrowhead toward the fletching, was a feature of Plains arrow-making associated with extraction from a wound and with structural reinforcement of the shaft. Turkey vulture feathers used as fletching reflect the use of locally available materials selected for their aerodynamic properties.

This bow retains its sinew backing and has developed a well-used patina through age and handling consistent with an object that saw active use in the field before entering the collection. The arrow is fletched with turkey vulture feathers and carries the blood groove characteristic of mid-19th century Plains arrow production. Provenance traces to Dave Hrachovy of Lake Arrowhead, California.
