Plateau Beaded Gauntlets with Floral Motifs, Well-Used Pair

$950.00

Columbia Plateau

Circa 1900

Glass beads on hide with fringe

Length 13¾ in. (34.9 cm), width 8½ in. (21.6 cm)

Provenance: Private collection, Cheyenne, WY

This pair of Plateau gauntlets is decorated with large floral motifs in yellow, red, and green on a turquoise blue ground, executed in lane stitch beadwork across the full cuff surface with long hide fringe at the lower edge. The floral vocabulary is characteristic of Columbia Plateau beadwork from the turn of the twentieth century, with naturalistic blooms rendered in bold color against the blue ground in a manner consistent with regional production of this period. The gauntlets show honest wear throughout, with the hide darkened and softened from use, indicating these were working objects rather than display pieces, which gives them a different character from preserved ceremonial examples. From a private collection in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
