This low, wide Pomo coiled basket has a rounded body covered in an allover checkerboard pattern of dark and natural elements that darkens considerably toward the rim. A row of small blue and white glass beads is worked into the coiling just below the rim, running the full circumference of the basket in the Pomo tradition of incorporating trade beads as marks of prestige and value. The surface has developed a rich, dark patina overall, particularly toward the upper body, with the beads standing out clearly against the aged ground.
