Portrait of a Gentleman in a Full Wig, Reverse Glass

$200.00

Continental, 19th century

Reverse painting on glass in a period frame

16 x 12 1/2 inches (40.6 x 31.8 cm) including frame

Provenance: Santa Fe trade

The sitter is shown half length within a painted oval, the head turned slightly to the sitter's left and the eyes meeting the viewer, framed by a full dark wig falling in heavy corkscrew curls to below the shoulders. A white linen cravat hangs in two broad tabs at the throat above a red mantle drawn across the chest, and the oval is set against a green ground with the spandrels left in the same green so the whole reads as a painted frame within the frame. Working in reverse on the glass has kept the flesh tones flat and unmodeled with the highlights laid in first, and the paint has flaked in small losses along the lower edge and at the outer corners where it meets the rebate.
