Chancay Effigy Vessel with Painted Geometric Face

$1,450.00

Chancay

Peru

Circa 1200 AD

Ceramic

Height 16 inches, Width 9 inches

Provenance: Bruce Pearson, Mesilla, New Mexico

The vessel takes the form of a standing figure with a wide, bulbous body tapering to a narrow neck and headdress. A dark painted band crosses the brow above two circular eyes, with additional stepped geometric motifs painted on the cheeks. Round disc shaped ear ornaments project from either side of the head, and the mouth is indicated by a short vertical dark line.

Dark brown painted lines outline a rectangular pattern across the front and sides of the body, suggesting the edges of a garment. A small modeled hand emerges from one side of the vessel, holding a miniature cup shaped spout that projects from the body near the waist. The surface throughout is a pale cream slip, with scattered surface wear consistent with age.
