Chancay
Peru
1000 to 1450 AD
Wood
Height 33 1/2 inches and 33 1/8 inches
Provenance: Jenack Auctions, New York, February 2002; The Lands Beyond, New York, January 2012; Private Collection, Honolulu, Hawaii
This matched pair of carved wood poles is topped with standing human figures wearing headdresses, each carved in the round at the crown of the shaft. Small rectangular insets are set into the wood at intervals along the length of each pole. The wood retains a warm brown patina consistent with long term aging.
The two poles are closely matched in height, carving style, and finish, suggesting they were produced together as a pair. Both poles remain intact along their full length, with the carved figures well preserved at the top. The pair has passed through three prior owners, including a New York auction house and two subsequent collections, before entering its current collection.
