Prince Kūhiō Campaign Armbands, Pair, Silk

$1,400.00

Hawaiʻi

Circa 1902–1922

Silk ribbon, printed text and portrait

Length: 35 in. (88.9 cm); Width: 2¼ in. (5.7 cm) each

Provenance: Randolph Crossley, Carmel, CA

This pair of campaign armbands was worn by supporters of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole during his congressional campaigns under the Home Rule Party. The armbands are printed in orange and gold with the text "Ke Kaulike" and "Elele Ho’opono" alongside a portrait of the Prince, reflecting the bilingual political culture of early territorial Hawaiʻi. Kūhiō served as Hawaiʻi's Delegate to the United States Congress from March 4, 1903 until his death in 1922, winning ten consecutive elections.

Campaign ephemera from the Kūhiō era is seldom encountered in pairs and in this state of preservation. The silk ribbon retains its color and the printed text and portrait remain legible. The Randolph Crossley provenance connects this piece to a documented California collection of Hawaiian political and cultural material.
