Navajo, Southwest
2015
Sterling silver, turquoise, shell, jet, leather, glass beads
Buckle 2 1/4 inches by 3 inches (5.7 by 7.6 cm)
Belt length 45 inches (114.3 cm)
Signed, hallmarked
Provenance: Private collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico
The buckle is inlaid with a night scene showing a multi story pueblo rendered in pale stone, set against a black jet ground scattered with small inlaid stars, with a turquoise moon and a shooting star crossing the upper field. At the left a stepped doorway opens onto a rising sun worked in graduated bands of turquoise, opal, and shell, and the whole composition is framed by a heavy silver border cut with a stepped fret pattern in relief. The buckle is mounted on a tan leather belt with a beaded panel in blue, red, and white glass beads worked in a diamond pattern along its length.
Hyson Craig is a Navajo silversmith working in the pictorial inlay tradition, in which each stone is cut and ground to fit its individual silver cell. Scenes of this kind demand precision at every joint, since the illusion of depth in the pueblo walls and the graduated sunrise depends entirely on the accuracy of the cutting. The buckle is signed and hallmarked on the reverse.
