Pueblo Turquoise Heishi Necklace with Jacla

$1,800.00

Pueblo

American Southwest

1930s

Natural turquoise, shell heishi, and red tubular beads

Length 32 in / 81 cm, jaclas 5 in / 12.7 cm
154.66 grams

Provenance: Private collection, Albuquerque, New Mexico

This Pueblo necklace strings flat turquoise tabs along a strand of fine shell heishi, the tabs graduating in size toward the front. At the center front hangs a three strand jacla, a turquoise heishi drop finished with red and white beads at its tips. The turquoise is natural, cut and drilled by hand into irregular tabs and disc beads rather than shaped to uniform cabochons.

Heishi and jacla necklaces are among the older forms of Southwestern jewelry, predating the silver squash blossom and worked entirely in drilled and strung stone and shell. The jacla began as a separate ear ornament that was often looped onto a necklace as a pendant, as it is here. The necklace retains its original pawn tag, a record of its time held as loan security at a trading post, which for old pawn pieces documents the object's age and history of use.
