Hawaiian Islands / Honolulu
Paris, 1841
Lithograph
Mat: 16 × 19 in. (40.6 × 48.3 cm); image: 10 × 13 in. (25.4 × 33 cm)
Provenance: John Dominis Holt, Honolulu, HI
This lithograph presents a street view in Honolulu, then the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, during the visit of the French frigate La Vénus in July 1837. Queen Kīnaʻu, also known as Kaʻahumanu II, is shown returning from the missionary church accompanied by her ladies of honor. The scene places Hawaiian chiefly presence, Western visitors, and the urban setting of Honolulu within a single printed image.
The print was issued in the Atlas pittoresque accompanying Abel Aubert Dupetit-Thouars’s Voyage autour du monde sur la frégate la Vénus. The frigate anchored off Honolulu on 8 July 1837 and remained for two weeks during a period marked by tensions involving Catholic missionaries, Protestant missions, and the Hawaiian monarchy. The John Dominis Holt provenance adds a Honolulu association to a work centered on Hawaiian political and urban history.
