Hardstone
18th century
6 1/4 in (15.87 cm) x 11 7/8 in (30.16 cm)
Provenance: Private Southern California Collection
A carved hardstone war club of the "slave killer" type associated with Northwest Coast cultures, worked from a dense dark stone with a naturally lustrous, polished surface consistent with age and handling. The form comprises a bifurcated (two-pronged/two-bladed) grip terminating in a stylized zoomorphic head — rendered with pricked ears, a defined muzzle, and incised facial detail suggestive of a bear or wolf — set atop an elongated, gently curved striking blade. Old surface wear, scattered abrasions, encrusted deposits in the carved recesses, and an attractive dark patina throughout consistent with considerable age and burial/handling history.
