Raymond Linfoot was a California painter active in the early 20th century whose work focused on the landscapes of the American Southwest, particularly the desert and mountain terrain around Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley. This small oil on board depicts a mountain range rising above a dry valley floor with scrub vegetation in the foreground, the scene consistent with the San Jacinto range and surrounding terrain of the Palm Springs vicinity. The paint is applied in a loose impressionist manner with warm earth tones and pale sky, characteristic of California plein-air practice of the period.
